Autonomous Systems, Area Codes and Network Addresses

Generally, a network is made up of as many autonomous systems (AS), or subnets. A commonly used number for an AS is 255. Each autonomous system with the same number has its own IP address, router, and network address. You can find out your network address or AS number by typing the command "show ip arp" in the command line interface (CLI).

Now that you know what an autonomous system is, let's take a look at how IP works in a networked environment.

Hierarchical IP Addressing

When computers on a network are communicating with each other, they must be able to exchange data. This means that both computers must have unique identification numbers. Each computer is assigned an address range from 0 through 127 (for example: 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255). These addresses are known as host addresses or hardware addresses for each individual computer; that is, they represent a specific device or workstation on the network (such as PC1).
